Torrevieja is preparing to celebrate the Norwegian National Day tomorrow, Sunday, May 17th. Gitte Lund, the Councillor for International Residents at Torrevieja Council, has announced that the day will be marked by the traditional parade. The procession is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at the Monument to the Man of the Sea (Hombre del Mar) on the Juan Aparicio promenade.
Gitte, herself a “foreigner,” recently caused controversy with her stance of not wanting certain foreigners’ legal residency in Spain, and there were calls for her resignation from many.
Hundreds of Norwegian residents from Torrevieja and other communities within the Vega Baja region are expected to participate. The parade will travel along the Juan Aparicio promenade towards Playa del Cura. Following the march, at 12:00 pm, the event will continue at the natural pools on the promenade with official institutional speeches and a performance by the Norwegian School Choir.
Each year, Norway celebrates its National Day on May 17th to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of its Constitution in 1814. Although full independence was not achieved until 1905, the date has remained the country’s primary national holiday and is a public holiday for Norwegians.
