The Juntos Avanzamos Neighbourhood Association of Playa de San Juan in Alicante has highlighted the importance of deploying police control campaigns to tackle street drinking, known as the botellón, in areas of the district where young people frequently gather to drink, such as an operation carried out on Tuesday night by the Local Police.
Spokespersons for the group stated that following the intervention carried out by the Local Police on Tuesday 25th in the central boulevard of Avenida de las Naciones against street drinking, the association wants to make its position crystal clear to everyone, especially younger people. They emphasised that the organisation is by no means against youth or fun, noting they fully understand that people want to go out in summer and enjoy the street, and acknowledging that the vast majority of young people are healthy, sports-minded, get up early to study or work, and do not seek to cause a disturbance.
However, the group stressed that it will not tolerate anti-social behaviour under any circumstances, regardless of its source. Uncivil attitudes only serve to damage the destination, deteriorate the neighbourhood, destroy parks and street furniture, as well as leave broken glass on the pavements, shout in the early hours, and wake up the whole neighbourhood, which cannot be allowed. They insisted that people can go out and enjoy the summer, but always with respect for others and property.
For this reason, the residents’ association offered its congratulations for the operation carried out on Tuesday 25th in the central boulevard of Avenida de las Naciones. Representatives stated that while it is great for young people to have meeting areas, gathering to break furniture, smash bottles, and cause intolerable noise crosses all limits. The association concluded by stating it will continue to defend coexistence, civility, and respect in the streets.
