The Guardia Civil has arrested a 58-year-old man in El Campello as the alleged perpetrator of four thefts from homes across Alicante and Murcia. The suspect reportedly stole cash, jewellery, and other valuable items worth more than 56,000 euro by pretending to be interested in buying the properties.
Officers from the Investigation Area at the El Campello main station launched Operation ‘Okyhb’ after a report that 5,500 euro had been stolen from a house during an arranged viewing.
Investigators uncovered a distinct modus operandi. The suspect would schedule appointments with estate agents and property owners under the guise of being a genuine buyer. After building trust during an initial viewing, he would ask to return to the property alone under the pretext of checking details. Once inside, he would steal cash, jewellery, and valuable items.
To arrange the appointments, the suspect allegedly used a false identity alongside multiple phone numbers registered to a fictitious person. These tactics complicated and extended the investigation, but officers eventually linked the suspect to similar crimes committed in Elche, Santa Pola, and Los Alcázares in Murcia. The theft in Los Alcázares alone resulted in losses of 15,000 euro in cash and jewellery worth 35,326 euro.
The arrested man has been brought before the courts as the alleged author of multiple offences of theft, with proceedings passed to the relevant section of the Alicante Court of Instance. The investigation remains open, and officers have not ruled out the possibility of identifying further victims.
