Two people were injured yesterday, Saturday, May 16th, during an omelette-making competition in Villajoyosa following the explosion of a gas canister. The incident occurred during celebrations for the feast of San Isidro when a small camping gas cylinder supplying a participant’s stove exploded.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene in the Alicante municipality, and the Information and Coordination Centre for Emergencies (CICU) dispatched a Basic Life Support unit. Medical staff treated a 77-year-old man for burns to his face and arm, while a 66-year-old woman received treatment for a hand injury. Both casualties were subsequently moved to the Marina Baixa Hospital for further care.
The competition was organised by the Ermita Festival Committee. Following the blast, the local council in Villajoyosa confirmed via social media that security and emergency protocols were immediately activated to manage the situation and assist those affected.
