An emergency evacuation plan was triggered on Friday after a fire broke out on the second floor of Torrevieja Hospital. The blaze left two patients injured and affected six members of staff who had rushed to help.
The fire caused a significant build-up of smoke and toxic gases, forcing the precautionary evacuation of the hospital’s entire second floor. Emergency services were quickly alerted, prompting the deployment of five fire engine crews from the nearby Torrevieja and Orihuela stations.

One patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to smoke inhalation, whilst another patient suffered burns. Additionally, six hospital employees required medical assistance for smoke inhalation after courageously stepping in to assist with the emergency response and evacuation efforts.
By early afternoon, firefighters were focusing their efforts on ventilating the healthcare facility to clear the lingering smoke and gas from the affected ward.
