On Wednesday, 20th May, a Lithuanian fugitive who had been sentenced to 13 years in prison for drug trafficking in his home country caused a commotion at the Provincial Police Station when he attempted to flee from the National Police after being apprehended while leaving the Alicante Courthouse because of an outstanding Lithuanian warrant.
He attacked the officers during his effort to flee, injuring one or two of them. In order to proceed with his extradition under the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), he will appear before the National Court today Friday, 22nd May. According to people familiar with the matter he will also need to appear before the Alicante duty court for assault and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
The National Police had apprehended the accused individual a few days prior while he and two fellow citizens were travelling through El Campello in a Toyota RAV4 that had been stolen in the Almería municipality of Garrucha in July 2023.
On Wednesday morning, the three Lithuanians who had been arrested—from whom 15,000 euros in cash and multiple frequency jammers had been taken from the car’s trunk—were brought before the duty court in Alicante. Following their testimony, which was supported by attorney Roberto Sánchez Martínez, all three were freed.
Inaccurate documentation
The vehicle had fake licence plates and registration paperwork, and it had been reported stolen nearly three years earlier. The arrested driver claimed that because he was incarcerated at the time of the theft, he did not steal the car.
After appearing in court, all three of the detainees were freed, but one of them was quickly released. One of the three Lithuanians, who had identified himself using someone else’s documents, was brought before the judge early on Wednesday morning, and the National Police were informed that he was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Lithuanian authorities to serve a 13-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.
As a result, as soon as the fugitive left the courtroom, officials from the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade apprehended him and transported him to the Provincial Police Station. The inmate, a hefty man, attempted to flee when he was near the area leading to the holding cells and resisted the police’ attempts to stop him. Even though one or two cops were hurt, the suspect was eventually restrained, and an investigation has been launched.
