The Torrevieja local government board has approved the project for the future Tomás Ballester Herrera day care centre for people suffering from Alzheimer and other neurodegenerative diseases. This strategic social and health infrastructure will involve a total investment of more than 10.8 million euro.
The new facility, driven forward in collaboration with AFA Torrevieja, will be built in Sector 25 of the municipal urban plan (PGOU) on a plot of almost 8,000 square metres located opposite the Quirón Hospital. The building itself will feature a constructed surface area of more than 2,700 square metres and is designed to provide specialised, modern care tailored to the exact needs of service users and their families.
Federico Alarcón, the councillor secretary of the local government board, reported that the approved project entails a total budget of 10,856,623 euro including VAT, establishing it as one of the most significant social and health initiatives planned for Torrevieja. The infrastructure will expand the care resources available for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer and other neurodegenerative conditions, whilst also offering professional support and specialised services for relatives and carers.
The future Tomás Ballester Herrera day care centre will offer spacious, accessible and fully adapted environments. The design focuses on an integral care model based on safety, cognitive stimulation, personal autonomy and user well-being across all stages of the illness. The building will be organised into three primary functional areas.
Firstly, an access and administration area of over 400 square metres will include a reception, offices, a multi-purpose room for professionals and an assembly hall, among other spaces designated for coordination and administrative duties. Secondly, a general services area spanning nearly 500 square metres will house a dining room, kitchen, laundry room, staff changing facilities and the logistical spaces required for daily operations. Finally, a specialised care area will serve as the core assistance hub of the building, with over 1,000 square metres dedicated to activity rooms, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, a medical consultation room and a psychological office. The centre will also feature additional amenities such as a hairdressing salon, podiatry services and adapted geriatric bathrooms.
The approval of this project marks a decisive step towards meeting one of the major social demands in Torrevieja. The rise in neurodegenerative illnesses requires the creation of dedicated facilities to enhance the quality of life for patients and ease the care burden on families. With this initiative, Torrevieja Council progresses with establishing a modern social and health care network equipped to address a growing reality within the municipality.
