The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Janet Fison has reached its one-year milestone, leaving the community of Jacarilla in deep distress. The 75-year-old British former professional dancer has been missing since 30th May 2025, when she went for a walk alongside the Segura River in the Alicante municipality.
Janet was a well-known and vibrant figure in the village, frequently showcasing her lifelong passion for dancing at local over-60s activities. One year later, her friends, neighbours and local business owners continue to mourn her sudden absence. Posters featuring her image remain displayed in prominent spots around the town, including a local pizzeria, which was her favourite restaurant and the place where she shared her final meal with her husband. The couple had even celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the establishment.
According to local accounts, the couple had dined at the pizzeria on the night of her disappearance and took an order of potatoes with alioli home for dinner. Whilst preparing the food in the kitchen, Janet mentioned to her husband that she had a headache. Her husband took over the cooking duties so she could rest. However, when he finished preparing the plates, Janet had completely vanished, leaving the front door open. Shortly before this, she had responded to a query about whether she was well by saying “good, good”, which marks the final known words she spoke.
Her disappearance sparked an extensive search operation involving the local community, the mayor of Jacarilla, Andrés Moñino, and a large deployment by the Guardia Civil. Despite these efforts, no physical trace of the 75-year-old has ever been recovered. The complete lack of clues has led to a variety of local rumours, whilst some suspect she may have been picked up by a passing motorist, particularly as a local pigeon-shooting competition was taking place nearby that evening. Her husband continues his desperate search to find her and provide her with a proper burial, even purchasing specialized fishing rods equipped with underwater cameras to search the Segura River, though his hopes are fading as time passes.
