National Police officers have arrested an insurance broker in Alicante for allegedly deceiving one of his clients by making him believe that nine investment policies had been processed, when he had actually taken the money by transferring it into his own bank account.
According to a police statement, the investigation began following a report from an individual who informed officers that he had been defrauded by an employee at an insurance firm. According to his statement, he had contracted nine savings and investment policies with a well-known insurance brokerage, totaling 92,000 euro.
Initially, the victim did not notice anything unusual, as the insurance broker provided him with receipts using the corresponding forms from the insurance company, complete with their stamps and letterheads. However, the complainant realised something was wrong when he made an enquiry about the contracted policies with another employee, who informed him that those specific policy numbers did not exist in the insurance company’s database.
Faced with the possibility that he had been deceived, the victim requested an immediate withdrawal of the deposited money from the worker with whom he had contracted the policies. At that moment, the insurance broker began to display an evasive attitude towards him.
Eventually, due to the victim’s insistence, the broker admitted that the policies he had set up were fake and promised to return all the money that had been deposited. However, he only made a single payment of 19,000 euro and stated that the rest would be returned within ten days.
After the agreed ten days had passed, and despite a formal request from the victim’s lawyer, the suspect failed to return the remainder of the money. Consequently, the victim decided to report the entire matter to the National Police.
Officers launched an investigation and discovered that the suspect had provided the victim with his own personal bank account number, into which all the payments to formalise the investment and savings policies were made. The victim had made up to ten deposits for the alleged policies, amounting to a total value of 73,000 euro.
Officers located the suspect, who was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of fraud and forgery. Following police proceedings, the 68-year-old man was released, and all findings have been forwarded to the duty Investigating Court of Alicante.
