The Generalitat budget for 2026 reveals that the province of Alicante will absorb one of the largest volumes of regional investment for Health and Social Services. More than 80 million euro has been assigned exclusively to the annual payments planned for the next financial year. A geographical analysis of the investment budget shows a distinct pattern, with the bulk of healthcare spending directed towards the major regional hospitals, whilst social infrastructure investments are concentrated in three high-population municipalities: Orihuela, Alicante and Benidorm.
Marina Baixa and Orihuela lead healthcare expansions
The healthcare sector accounts for the most significant portion of the funding. The Marina Baixa Health Department tops the list, with 28.15 million euro allocated for a comprehensive overhaul of the hospital in Villajoyosa, making it one of the largest individual projects within the entire regional budget.
Orihuela represents the second major funding block, securing 19 million euro. This capital will be divided between the reform of its health department and the expansion of the Specialised Care Inpatient Unit (UIAE). The Baix Segura region continues to be an area facing intense healthcare pressure, which is reflected in this high level of investment.
In Alicante city, the regional government is focusing 14.65 million euro across several key projects. This includes 8 million euro for the new ISABIAL building, which is currently under construction and serves as a vital scientific infrastructure hub for the local healthcare network. Furthermore, 3.95 million euro is allocated to renovate the Health Department at the General Hospital, 200,000 euro will go towards improvements in the emergency department, and 2.5 million euro is earmarked for operations within the Sant Joan Health Department.
Elche is the third major focus for healthcare capital, receiving 9.02 million euro. This funding includes upgrades to its health department and a first phase of improvements to the surgical area at the General Hospital.
Other municipalities across the province receiving notable investments include Torrevieja with 2.85 million euro, Elda with 2.5 million euro, Alcoy with 1.85 million euro, and Dénia with 300,000 euro.
This funding map confirms a clear strategy of reinforcing regional hospitals and departments that face structural deficits, whilst investment in the capital focuses on strategic projects and specific upgrades.
Orihuela leads social services funding to restore old asylum
The regional ministry for social services has allocated 6.18 million euro to social infrastructure across the Alicante province, focusing on three primary developments:
- Orihuela: 3.09 million euro will be spent on the long-requested rehabilitation of the old asylum.
- Alicante (La Florida): 1.88 million euro is dedicated to upgrading the public residential home.
- Benidorm: 1.21 million euro will fund the modernisation of the residential home and day-care centre.
