A well-known and heroic marine visitor has returned to the coastline of Denia for the third summer in a row, setting an impressive record. Diana, one of the most famous loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in Europe, who is named after the Roman goddess that inspired the city’s name, laid 106 eggs on a Denia beach during the early hours of Monday morning. This marks the first nesting of the season in the Valencian Community and represents another extraordinary event for marine biodiversity.
To guarantee their survival, the eggs have been carefully moved from the original nest to a secure area of the beach further away from the shoreline. This protection protocol involved multiple organisations dedicated to safeguarding marine turtles along these coasts, including the Generalitat Valenciana, Denia Town Hall, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Oceanografic Valencia.
Following the discovery, authorities have issued a reminder to the public, urging beachgoers and walkers to immediately call 112 if they see a turtle emerging from the sea or notice any tracks. It is vital not to disturb or dazzle the animals.
