The Torrevieja Municipal Theatre is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special commemorative programme of activities, marking two decades of theatrical, cultural and social events since its inauguration on 28th June 2006. Over the last 20 years, the venue has welcomed more than 600,000 spectators and hosted over 1,500 performances, establishing itself as a major cultural landmark in both the city and the wider Alicante province.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, joined by the Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, presented the celebratory events organised under the slogan “20 years sharing culture, making the heart of Torrevieja beat”. The commemoration aims to recognise the vital role the theatre plays as a meeting point for generations of local residents, artists, associations and visitors.
Throughout these two decades, the Municipal Theatre has hosted plays, concerts, dance productions, musicals, competitions, galas and various cultural gatherings. Major national and international companies, top-tier artists and hundreds of local creators have shared their talent on its stage. Specifically, the venue has seen the participation of more than 50 cultural and musical entities from Torrevieja and has hosted more than 30 musicals.
To kick off the celebrations, an audiovisual video has been released to look back at some of the most notable artistic, technical and human milestones since the theatre opened. The anniversary events will also feature guided tours allowing the public to discover the inner workings of the building, dramatised readings and a retrospective exhibition.
Mayor Dolón highlighted that this anniversary is a tribute to culture and to the people who make it possible every day, praising the theatre’s staff and the involvement of the Municipal Theatre School. The school will play a leading role in the special programme, with the third-year group performing “Siglo mío, bestia mía” tomorrow Thursday 25th, the fourth-year adult group staging “Verano en diciembre” on Saturday 27th, and the youth group presenting a free adaptation of “La hija del aire” on Sunday 28th. With this commemorative schedule, Torrevieja reaffirms its commitment to culture as a driving force for social, educational and tourism development.
