Rail passengers across Spain face significant disruption today, Monday, 29th June, as Renfe cancels 320 trains due to a 24-hour strike called by the Railway Union (SF). According to the minimum services outlined by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the operator expects to run 262 High-Speed and Long-Distance services, representing 73 per cent of its usual schedule.
Medium-distance services are expected to run at 65 per cent of their planned capacity, with 420 trains remaining scheduled. Meanwhile, commuter rail services will operate at 75 per cent capacity during peak travel windows, which are defined as 06:00 to 09:00, 13:30 to 16:00, and 18:30 to 20:30.
Renfe is encouraging passengers affected by the cancellations to travel on the next available train nearest to their original booking time. Alternatively, passengers may change or cancel their tickets free of charge via the company’s standard sales channels.

This industrial action is the first of two planned 24-hour strikes, with the second scheduled for 15th July, a date that coincides with the start of many workers’ holidays. The dispute centres on the future of Renfe Mercancías. The union has accused the company of abandoning the service and opposes the formation of a joint venture with Medway, a subsidiary of the MSC group. The union claims that previous agreements made with the Ministry of Transport in November 2023 and March 2025 are not being upheld regarding the workload of the subsidiary.
