Three Irish people have died and two others have been injured following a major road traffic collision in Malaga, Spain.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, 28th June, at approximately 2.38am, near Cerrado de Calderón. According to local reports, two vehicles collided on a dangerous stretch of the busy A-7 motorway as they were travelling towards Almeria. The impact caused one of the vehicles to plunge approximately 30 metres down a steep embankment.
Two women and one man lost their lives at the scene, whilst another man sustained serious injuries. It is understood that the individuals involved are in their late 20s and originate from the Midlands region of Ireland, specifically Mullingar in County Westmeath. Reports indicate that one of the deceased and one of the injured individuals are brothers.
Emergency services, including the fire service, attended the scene to free those who were trapped inside the vehicles. Officers from the Guardia Civil were deployed to the location and have taken full charge of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland confirmed that it is aware of the incident and is currently providing consular assistance to the families of the victims.
