The Department of Sports in Torrevieja has ordered the temporary closure of seven padel tennis courts at the municipal sports complex (Ciudad Deportiva) following the consecutive shattering of three glass panels over the past week. The closure has been put in place to allow a full investigation into the cause of the breakages.
The decision to shut the facilities, which recently underwent a comprehensive renovation with an investment of more than one million euro and were opened in October 2025, follows reports submitted by the technical engineer responsible for the works and the municipal project supervisor. It is estimated that the courts will remain closed for approximately two weeks.
According to municipal sources, the measure was adopted under technical recommendation to guarantee the absolute safety of users and prevent any physical risk from further potential breakages. The local council has requested an urgent expert assessment from the contracting company, Pavasal, to determine why the glass fractured and to implement the necessary corrective measures.
The local authority has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to players. They noted that the broken panels consisted of 12-millimetre-thick tempered safety glass, with the installation across the seven panoramic courts carrying a total cost of 46,000 euro.
Specialist companies point out that fractures in this type of safety glass can be triggered by various factors, including direct impacts, installation defects, excessive pressure on the anchors, structural movements, or vibrations. Whilst high temperatures alone do not explain the shattering without a formal expert inspection, they could be a contributing factor if they have created significant thermal differences.
