Residents in Torrellano are demanding an increase in inspections regarding long-stay airport parking lots, claiming that facilities which have previously been sealed by authorities are still maintaining some level of activity.
Locals have captured video footage showing vehicles being parked outside the boundary of the plots. The president of the Torrellano Road Association, Juan José Mateo, warned that the problem with these parking compounds was originally caused by the previous socialist municipal government when they approved the installation of these sites during a plenary session.
He explained that foreign companies first arrived in 2003 to purchase and rent land to create these compounds for long-stay vehicle parking. He acknowledged that the current mayor is the only one who is enforcing the regulations, and stated that the responsibility for processing these businesses lies with the Regional Ministry.
He expressed regret that this activity has not been regularised on protected rural land and requested that all compounds be sealed because they fail to comply with the law.
The Torrellano Road Association warns that these parking compounds have restricted the growth of the districts located near the airport. They also denounce that drivers are already parking on the streets of Torrellano and El Altet, leaving local neighbours without parking spaces.
