A clash between the Torrevieja Local Police and a group of street vendors has resulted in one officer and two agents being injured, arrests, and moments of high tension in the street. The incident occurred on Thursday night, 9th July, on the seafront promenade, and a video of the confrontation has now surfaced and is circulating on social media.
The police force was carrying out its usual work in the fight against the illegal street sale of counterfeit goods and the removal of counterfeit material when they suffered a serious incident, according to Federico Alarcón, the Councillor for Security, Police and Emergencies.
During the intervention by one of the officers on duty, one of the street vendors became agitated and started a fight, assaulting the officer and hurling insults and death threats.
More police officers arrived immediately to assist their colleague, who suffered a split lip. Another individual involved in the clash grabbed an officer’s baton and assaulted him. At the same time, four Guardia Civil patrols arrived at the scene.
Councillor Alarcón lamented that this was not the first time such an incident had happened. He questioned the whereabouts of the Subdelegation and Delegation of the Government, from whom the City Council has demanded more Guardia Civil officers. He added that the Guardia Civil does not have the growth that the city needs.
The councillor explained that, due to insufficient personnel, the Local Police end up taking on this task. He concluded by stating that episodes like these cannot be tolerated, adding that officers, residents, shopkeepers, and restaurant owners are fed up with situations of this nature.
