The Generalitat Valenciana has allocated 884,000 euro to enhance the thermal comfort of 73 public educational centres in Elche. This funding is part of a wider initiative launched by the president of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, which sees a global investment of 16 million euro directed towards educational institutions throughout the Valencian Community.
This direct investment allows the educational centres themselves to quickly and individually undertake the most necessary measures to improve conditions for both students and teaching staff facing high temperatures. The grants range between 5,000 and 25,000 euro per centre. The funds can be used for actions such as installing air conditioning and ventilation systems, creating shaded areas, or improving sun protection.
In Elche, the funding will be split between 55 early childhood, primary, special education, and CRA centres, which will receive a total of 498,500 euro. A further 18 secondary and special regime education centres will share 375,500 euro.
The Mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, highlighted that practically the entirety of the public education network in Elche stands to benefit from this investment, spanning both primary and secondary centres. He noted that it is a direct investment arriving at the schools so they can act swiftly with planning that is tailored to their specific needs.
Ruz emphasised that the goal is to improve the well-being, health, and learning conditions of the students and teaching staff, and he expressed gratitude for the commitment of the Generalitat’s president to this measure, which will improve classroom comfort across Elche.
The Mayor also recalled that the Elche Ayuntamiento started its own climate control plan during its first year in office, investing 1.7 million euro to improve thermal conditions in municipal nursery schools.
Furthermore, the 80 portable air conditioning units that were provisionally installed in municipal nursery schools will now be transferred to various classrooms in public schools across the municipality, aiming to reinforce climate control during the hottest periods.
The Mayor concluded by stating that this action demonstrates how the Generalitat and the Ayuntamiento are working in the same direction to improve educational facilities and guarantee more comfortable spaces for children, young people, and teachers.
