A 61-year-old man who was arrested following the death of his 56-year-old wife in Almoradí has been released without charge. The decision came after an autopsy revealed that the woman died of natural causes, which triggered a fall down the stairs, rather than from foul play.
Emergency services were alerted around 23:00 on Monday evening, 20th July, regarding a body found at a property in the town centre of Almoradí. The woman, identified as María del Carmen, suffered injuries from falling down the stairs after experiencing a medical collapse.
Initial inspections of the scene by the Guardia Civil and local officers raised suspicions due to inconsistencies in the husband’s statement and traces of blood found inside the home. As a precautionary measure, the husband was detained while investigators from the Judicial Police, the Women and Minors Team, and the Crime Laboratory of the Alicante Guardia Civil Command evaluated the situation.
It was noted that the couple were registered in the VioGén system following an incident in 2008, though the file had been inactive since 2009 due to a lack of judicial measures.
Following the definitive forensic findings, which confirmed that all visible injuries were entirely consistent with the fall caused by her sudden physical collapse, authorities confirmed there were no indications of criminality. The husband was immediately released from custody, and the paperwork will be forwarded to the courts in Orihuela for the official closure of the case.
