The University of Alicante will be represented at the 2026 European Universities Games (EUSA Games) by its men’s handball team, following their victory as 2025 Spanish university champions. Winning the national title secured qualification for the UA team to compete in this international tournament, which brings together athletes from universities across Europe in Salerno, Italy.
The opening ceremony for the handball event took place yesterday, Sunday, 26th July. Tournament matches will start today Monday, 27th July, running through to the final on 1st August.
The men’s team enters the competition following a successful run in national university sports, highlighted by their gold medal at the 2025 Spanish University Championship. Competing in Salerno places the University of Alicante back on one of the main stages of European academic sport.
Organised by the European University Sports Association every two years, the European Universities Games stand as the main multi-sport event for higher education. The Salerno edition runs from 18th July to 1st August and features thirteen sports, with organisers expecting around 4,000 athletes and delegation members from roughly 400 universities across Europe.
Competing in Salerno gives the UA squad the chance to face top university teams from across the continent while representing the University of Alicante internationally.
