Cartagena Local Police are set to intensify speed monitoring and control across the municipality from 3rd to 9th August in a special campaign organised in collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic.
Throughout the week, officers will deploy mobile radar units along roads in the urban centre as well as across various outlying districts. The primary objective of the initiative is to prevent road accidents and raise awareness among motorists about the crucial importance of respecting established speed limits. Excessive speed significantly increases both the risk of collisions and the severity of injuries sustained by those involved.
Traffic authorities emphasise that excessive speed remains the third most common contributing factor in road accidents, playing a particularly prominent role in incidents that result in fatalities.
The Local Police have also reminded drivers of the standard urban speed limits in force since 11th May 2021:
- 20 kilometres per hour on streets featuring a single platform for both the roadway and pavement.
- 30 kilometres per hour on roads with a single lane for each direction of traffic.
- 50 kilometres per hour on roads with two or more lanes per direction of traffic.
These general limits apply unless specific road signs indicate a different speed limit. Cartagena Local Police are urging all drivers to adhere strictly to the regulations, adapt their speed to prevailing road conditions, and exercise maximum caution behind the wheel to protect all road users.
