The Department for Citizen Security at Murcia Town Hall is investigating a viral video showing a local police officer allegedly slapping a detained man inside a patrol car. The footage, which was filmed by a neighbour from a window, has accumulated hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms, including X (Twitter) and TikTok.
The incident occurred over six weeks ago in the Polígono de La Paz district in Murcia. According to police sources, officers were responding to a call regarding a suspect with a criminal record who was arrested for robbery with force, specifically for snatching a woman’s handbag and mobile phone in the centre of Murcia.
In the recording, the two officers handle the suspect. One officer removes an item from the man’s hands and drops it onto the ground, while the other leads the unresisting detainee to the official vehicle. However, once the man is seated inside the car, the officer appears to deliver a blow to his face. The filming neighbour can be heard shouting at the officer, who turns and confronts the resident after being insulted from the window.
Police sources noted that the video lacks the full context of the intervention. They stated that the reaction inside the vehicle may have been prompted by resistance from the suspect, such as spitting, biting, headbutting, or kicking the officer.
The viral spread of the clip prompted the trade union organisation Somos Sindicalistas to issue a statement reaffirming zero tolerance for any police actions outside the law. The union stated it would not make a direct evaluation of the specific officer’s actions, trusting that competent authorities will investigate and determine appropriate steps according to official procedures.
Murcia Town Hall confirmed that the incident relates to an arrest made months ago. Following his arrest, the individual was brought before a judge and subsequently remanded in prison. Local authority sources added that no formal complaints had been received regarding the intervention, but confirmed that the video footage will be thoroughly investigated.
