Guardia Civil officers have arrested a man at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera after he attempted to board a flight to Manchester carrying nearly 15 kilograms of illegal drugs in his luggage.
The operation was part of the special security operation “Operación Verano Seguro”, carried out by specialists from the Guardia Civil Fiscal and Borders Section.
The intervention began during a routine inspection of checked baggage when officers detected a suspicious suitcase in the airport hold area and initiated protocols to locate its owner. Upon noticing the police activity from inside the terminal, the passenger fled the facilities on foot, successfully evading arrest at that moment.
Following the escape, officers opened and inspected the abandoned suitcase. Inside, they discovered four kilograms of marijuana buds packaged in six vacuum-sealed bags, alongside more than ten kilograms of hashish distributed in acorn-shaped cylinders across five bags.
The Guardia Civil launched an investigation that gathered sufficient information to issue a search and arrest warrant. Five days later, the suspect returned to Corvera airport in a second attempt to leave the country for the United Kingdom.
To avoid detection, the man attempted to disguise his identity by wearing a hat and had a third party purchase a last-minute ticket to Manchester on his behalf. However, Guardia Civil officers recognised the suspect as he attempted to pass through the airport security checkpoint and immediately arrested him on suspicion of drug trafficking and offences against public health.
