The Sueña Torrevieja municipal group is presenting a proposal to the local council meeting to drive forward a full restoration of the Plaza del Embarcadero in La Mata. The initiative aims to improve the site and highlight its historical, heritage, and tourist significance.
Pablo Samper, the spokesperson for Sueña Torrevieja, emphasised that La Mata possesses a unique identity linked to the sea, salt, and local traditions, with a strong sense of community. He noted that the Plaza del Embarcadero represents the essence of La Mata, but current conditions include damaged elements, worn tourist signage, and various defects that undermine the area’s image and usability for residents and visitors alike.
Samper stressed that the project should go beyond basic repairs, focusing instead on protecting local history and maintaining a key landmark. Following an amendment submitted by the PP political party during the motion’s processing, Sueña Torrevieja proposed that the works be carried out by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Torrevieja Town Hall, ensuring local municipal involvement in the restoration.
Samper concluded that residents want solutions rather than political debate, and that public administrations must work together to restore a space that forms part of the collective memory of La Mata.
