A sailboat carrying two people had to be rescued on Tuesday, 4th August, after running aground in the channel located between Portitxol Island and the coast of Javea. The vessel issued an emergency alert, prompting the Valencia Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to deploy the Salvamar Fenix, which is based in Javea, to the scene.
Upon arrival, the crew of the Salvamar successfully managed to free the stranded sailboat and inspect its condition. After verifying that the vessel had sustained no damage affecting its buoyancy and could safely resume navigation, the Salvamar Fenix concluded its operation and returned to its base at the port of Javea. Neither of the two individuals on board suffered any injuries during the incident.
The grounding occurred in the channel between Portitxol Island and the coastline, an area where vessel navigation is restricted. The zone is clearly marked with a system of buoys delimiting the passage, designed to prevent boats from passing through shallow waters of high environmental value. Despite the clear signage, numerous skippers attempt to navigate the narrow channel each summer, increasing the risk of groundings—such as a similar incident that occurred just two weeks ago—and risking damage to both vessels and the marine ecosystem.
