National Police officers in Alicante have arrested a 44-year-old man who was subject to a European Arrest Warrant issued by Lithuanian authorities for drug trafficking offences.
Officers from the Alicante Provincial Police Station initially intercepted the individual whilst he was driving a stolen vehicle. Upon being detained for the alleged theft, the suspect presented false identification belonging to another person.
Subsequent checks by officers revealed that the identity documents were not his and uncovered the active European Arrest Warrant. Lithuanian authorities had been searching for the suspect following an incident in 2017, when he was intercepted transporting almost 1,500 grams of methamphetamine. The extradition warrant was officially activated in 2023, carrying a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison in Lithuania.
Consequently, officers arrested the man for fraudulent use of official documents as well as on the outstanding international warrant.
However, after being taken to the police station, the situation escalated when the detainee attempted to break custody. The suspect launched himself at the guarding officers, delivering a heavy push that knocked one officer to the ground before running towards the exit. Officers managed to intercept him, though he resisted violently and caused injuries to an officer during the struggle.
Following the escape attempt, he faces additional charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer and causing bodily harm. The suspect has been placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction of the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid to process his extradition to Lithuania.
