British tourist dies following parasailing accident in Benidorm

A 66-year-old British woman has died after a parasailing accident off Levante beach in the Rincón de Loix area of Benidorm. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, Monday 10th August, at around 6.00 pm, coinciding with a sudden change in weather conditions across the Marina Baixa region.

According to initial reports gathered at the scene, a sudden strong gust of wind caused the rope connecting the parachute to the tow boat to snap while two participants were high in the air, causing them to fall from a significant height.

Emergency medical services attended to the victims and performed resuscitation manoeuvres on the 66-year-old woman, who had suffered cardiac arrest following the heavy impact. Although health workers managed to recover her pulse after several minutes of intervention, she tragically died later in hospital. A second participant, a man aged between 40 and 50, sustained injuries including potential rib fractures, though he remained conscious and was able to walk.

Officers are examining whether the sudden wind gusts directly caused the rope failure and subsequent fall.

At the time of the accident, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had activated a yellow alert for coastal phenomena, with conditions changing rapidly from intense heat to rain and high winds. Official sources have not confirmed whether the victims impacted the sea, the rocks, or both. The Guardia Civil will also assess whether the decision by the parasailing operator to proceed with flights during the yellow weather warning contributed directly to the fatal event.
