Orihuela Town Council is currently executing a series of improvement works at the CEIP Virgen de la Puerta primary school to ensure that pupils can start the new academic year safely and in the best possible conditions. The tasks are being carried out by municipal workforce teams under the supervision of technical staff from the relevant department.
The key actions being undertaken include repair work on structural pillars, the removal of damaged window sills, cleaning of the building facade and roof, waterproofing of critical areas, as well as fixing peeling plaster and applying new coats of paint.
At the same time, Orihuela Town Council is continuing its efforts to make a suitable plot of land available to the Generalitat Valenciana. This site will host temporary prefabricated classrooms for as long as necessary, allowing the regional Regional Ministry of Education to carry out either a comprehensive refurbishment or whatever major project it determines.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, stressed that upgrading CEIP Virgen de la Puerta is an absolute priority for the local government. He stated that the ultimate goal remains finding a permanent solution that gives the community a school fully adapted to modern needs. He added that the administration has worked non-stop since taking office to resolve this inherited issue, reaffirming his commitment to the educational community that the current problems will soon be a thing of the past.
The CEIP Virgen de la Puerta facility in Orihuela was officially received in 1972 and began welcoming pupils in 1973. Just three years later, cracks were detected in the floor slabs of the multi-purpose hall and on the eastern side of the playground. Structural issues have persisted ever since, even forcing a temporary evacuation of the building back in 1990. Although various alternatives have been considered over the decades, none reached fruition until now, as a definitive resolution finally begins to take shape.
