Ireland is preparing to issue a special commemorative 2 euro coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary rock group U2. The landmark release will mark half a century since the band formed in Dublin back in 1976.
The historic milestone traces back to 25th September 1976, when 14-year-old drummer Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice on his school bulletin board looking for musicians to set up a band. That fateful response led Paul Hewson (Bono), David Evans (The Edge), and Adam Clayton to gather in Mullen’s family kitchen in Dublin. The group initially called themselves Feedback, later became The Hype, and eventually adopted the name U2, going on to achieve global rock stardom.
Fifty years to the day after that initial meeting, Ireland has selected 25 September to issue the special tribute. The Central Bank of Ireland confirmed that the release will be a legal tender 2 euro coin rather than a simple promotional medal or token. While one side will feature the standard national design common to all 2 euro pieces across the eurozone, the opposite side will display the dedicated motif celebrating U2.
Although the coin will hold legal tender status across the eurozone, it is being produced primarily as a limited collectors’ piece rather than entering general circulation. Special presentations, including Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and Proof formats, will be made available for purchase through the official website, collectorcoins.ie.
The Central Bank has kept the precise design of the coin under wraps, generating widespread anticipation among numismatists and music fans alike. Further details regarding the exact visual design and total mintage figures are expected to be unveiled closer to the official release date.
