Explosives disposal experts from the Guardia Civil have neutralised six highly degraded anti-hail rockets found inside a home in the town of Pétrola, Albacete.
The discovery was made by the property owner, who uncovered the explosive devices while carrying out cleaning duties in an old building. Recognising the potential danger, the owner refrained from handling the items and immediately reported the find to the Guardia Civil.
Following the notification, a member of the Explosive Ordnance Search and Location Team (EBYL) from the Guardia Civil Command in Albacete attended the site. The officer collected preliminary information regarding the condition and characteristics of the materials while establishing safety protocols in and around the immediate premises.
The Albacete Complex Operational Centre subsequently contacted the Guardia Civil Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (GEDEX) based in Alicante. Two specialist officers were dispatched to Pétrola to safely manage the devices.
It is believed the six anti-hail rockets may have been stored at the location for several decades. Although they may appear harmless on the surface, authorities warned that such devices are extremely hazardous due to the instability of their internal explosive payload, particularly when handled incorrectly.
The TEDAX specialists carried out a controlled explosion in a suitable nearby area to safely destroy the rockets. Specialised equipment was utilised during the procedure to ensure safety and minimise any potential impact on the surrounding environment.
