The vandalised Rocas Blancas hotel in Santa Pola is on track for revival. Three years after an Elche-based developer, Grupo Asa, announced its intention to rescue the complex from ruin, the local council has granted the building licence. The hotel moved from a golden era to complete abandonment, even listing itself for sale on Wallapop for four million euro. The local government, led by the PP, says the company plans to start the comprehensive renovation imminently, aiming for this coming September. The project execution period is estimated at 18 months.
The urban project aims to recover the original spirit of the property, upgrading it to a four-star establishment with 105 rooms to end 16 years of degradation following its closure in 2010. The council considers the project a major boost for local tourism. The project will also tackle one of the main drawbacks of the location: its physical separation from the town centre by the N-332 national road.
To resolve this issue, the developer proposes constructing a pedestrian footbridge over the busy road. This will connect the 23,000-square-metre hotel complex with the town centre and link directly to the area around the Molí de la Calera, a listed Asset of Local Relevance. The infrastructure will allow future guests to move around without needing a car.
During a plenary session, the municipal government designated the private project as an initiative of special interest or municipal utility, citing cultural, historical, social, and economic reasons. They approved a 50% discount on the Construction, Installations, and Works Tax (ICIO). The mayor, Loreto Serrano, highlighted the owner’s commitment and noted that the scheme supports cultural heritage, social benefits, and job creation. The Treasury councillor, José Pedro Martínez, stated that the investment will eliminate a ruined structure thanks to municipal management and business confidence.
In 2023, the business group, which already owns a four-star hotel in Gran Alacant, informed the council of its intention to reform Rocas Blancas. The team carried out initial preparatory works, including clearing weeds, reinforcing the structure, and removing graffiti. In October 2024, the property confirmed in a statement that work was ongoing to create the future “Resort Hotel ASA Rocas Blancas,” combining luxury and sustainability.
The hotel closed during the economic crisis after operating for years as a prime resort featuring a swimming pool, spa, gym, and event spaces. Following its closure, the site suffered extensive vandalism, theft, and small fires, forcing the council to request security measures and board up access points.
