Officers from the National Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in the city of Alicante who was wanted under a European arrest warrant issued by Austrian authorities for offences against property. Specifically, he is accused of a series of alcohol thefts from commercial premises totalling more than 29,000 euro.
According to a police statement, the events leading to the arrest occurred in January of this year in Austria. The wanted individual, together with third parties, allegedly committed several burglaries at supermarkets.
The arrested man is linked to at least eleven incidents in which he allegedly stole alcoholic beverages from stores with a total value of 29,187 euro.
Once the requesting country issued the European arrest warrant, officers began enquiries to ascertain his whereabouts. He was eventually located and detained by a citizen security patrol in the town of Alicante.
The fugitive had fled from Austrian justice after being sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Following police procedures, he has been placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction of the Audiencia Nacional, the body responsible for carrying out the process for his subsequent extradition.
