August has closed with 100 deaths attributable to high temperatures in the province of Alicante, according to estimates provided by the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute. Across the wider Valencian Community, a total of 225 fatalities were recorded during the month.
Since the official start of summer on 21st June, heat-related deaths across the autonomous region have reached 517. Data from the MoMo system shows that the deadliest week of the season occurred between 6th and 12th July, recording 104 deaths, followed closely by the period from 17th to 23rd August, which accounted for 100 fatalities.
During July, the Valencian Community registered 235 deaths linked to extreme heat, representing an increase of 11 compared to the same month last year. The 225 deaths reported in August also mark a rise of 25 fatalities compared to August 2025.
Within the August statistics, the week between 17th and 23rd August proved to be the most severe of the month with 100 casualties. The weeks immediately preceding and following it each recorded 56 heat-related deaths.
Of the 225 fatalities across the region in August, 100 were in the province of Alicante, 65 in Castellón, and 60 in Valencia. The victims comprised 116 men and 109 women, with the majority aged over 65.
The highest single-day mortality figures for the region this summer were recorded on 10th July with 22 deaths, 9th July with 20th, and both 11th July and 21st August with 19 deaths each. On 22nd August, 18 fatalities were registered.
By comparison, between 21st June and 30th August 2025, the region recorded 385 heat-attributable deaths, which is 132 fewer than the 517 registered during the corresponding period in 2026.
