The National Police have arrested a man in Rafal who is suspected of involvement in fourteen burglaries targeting homes across the province of Alicante. A second suspect linked to the series of break-ins was arrested in Alicante.
The suspects, aged 49 and 68, travelled between various municipalities across the province to carry out the burglaries. According to the National Police, the pair generally targeted properties occupied by elderly residents.
The investigation was launched after an elderly woman reported a burglary at her home to the Comisaría de Distrito Centro in Alicante. She stated that large quantities of jewellery, 3,000 euro in cash, watches, two cameras, and a tablet had been stolen from her property.
Officers from the Specialised Crime Group at the Alicante Provincial Police Headquarters launched an inquiry and identified two men linked to the incidents. Further enquiries revealed that the suspects travelled to several locations in the province to carry out the thefts, including Elche, Elda, and Villena.
Officers tracked down and arrested one of the suspects in Alicante. During a body search, officers discovered tools and utensils allegedly used to force or open door locks.
The second suspect was subsequently located in Rafal, where he was arrested on suspicion of multiple home burglaries. Among his belongings, officers found tools used for forcing doors, including two screwdrivers.
Police enquiries established that, while one man entered the properties to carry out the burglaries, the other stayed outside to keep watch on the stairwells and building entrances. The pair stayed in touch via telephone calls to alert each other if residents returned or if a neighbour entered the building.
Following the arrests, the National Police carried out searches at the homes of both suspects. Officers seized jewellery, perfumes, and sunglasses originating from the burglaries, alongside various lock-picking and door-opening tools.
The seized items included blank keys and materials used for the lock-picking technique known as “impresioning”, as well as plastic strips used for the slip method.
So far, officers have linked the two men to at least fourteen residential burglaries: seven in Alicante, five in Elche, one in Elda, and one in Villena.
The National Police are keeping the investigation open to determine whether the suspects are connected to additional burglaries reported in other towns across Alicante province. Following police proceedings, both men were handed over to the duty Investigating Court in Alicante.
