Heat warning issued for Alicante province with temperatures set to pass 36 degrees

A mass of warm air carrying suspended dust is bringing unusually high temperatures to the first few days of September. Following days of sweltering conditions along the coast and high temperatures inland, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow alert for the province of Alicante.

Both the southern and northern parts of Alicante will be under the high temperature warning. Maximum temperature thresholds have been set at 36 degrees, though peaks could reach up to 38 degrees in the most exposed areas. Aemet has activated this warning primarily in areas located further inland from the coast, although coastal regions will still experience a sweltering day with highs exceeding 30 degrees and lows that frequently will not drop below 24 degrees.

The yellow alert for heat applies to numerous municipalities across the region:

• Vega Baja del Segura: Torrevieja, Orihuela, Almoradí, Callosa de Segura, Guardamar del Segura, Pilar de la Horadada, Albatera, San Fulgencio, Catral, Cox, Bigastro, Redován, San Miguel de Salinas, Algorfa, Biar, Benejúzar, Los Montesinos, Rafal, Formentera del Segura, Jacarilla, Benijófar, Granja de Rocamora, and Daya Nueva / Daya Vieja.
• Lower Vinalopó: Elche, Santa Pola, and Crevillent.
• The Alicante area: Alicante, San Vicente del Raspeig, El Campello, Sant Joan d’Alacant, Mutxamel, Agost, and Aigües.
• El Comtat: Agres, Alcocer de Planes, Alfafara, Almudaina, l’Alqueria d’Asnar, Balones, Benasau, Beniarrés, Benilloba, Benillup, Benimarfull, Benimassot, Cocentaina, Facheca, Famorca, Gaianes, Gorga, Lorcha, Millena, Muro de Alcoy, Planes, Quatretondeta, and Tollos.
• Marina Alta: Alcalalí, l’Atzúbia, Beniarbeig, Benidoleig, Benigembla, Benimeli, Benissa, Benitachell, Calpe, Castell de Castells, Dénia, Gata de Gorgos, Javea, Llíber, Murla, Ondara, Orba, Parcent, Pedreguer, Pego, els Poblets, Ràfol d’Almúnia, Sagra, Sanet y Negrals, Senija, Teulada, Tormos, Vall d’Alcalà, Vall d’Ebo, Vall de Gallinera, Vall de Laguar, El Verger, and Xaló.
• Other districts: Aspe and Hondón de las Nieves.
• L’Alcoià: Alcoleja.
• Marina Baixa: Altea, Beniardá, Benifato, Benimantell, Bolulla, Callosa d’en Sarrià, El Castell de Guadalest, Confrides, Sella, and Tàrbena.

Aemet explains that the combination of this hot air influx and strong sunshine is causing a progressive rise in temperatures, resulting in very high values for this time of year. The agency highlights that the most intense heat will occur during the middle of the day, urging caution during outdoor activities and special care for vulnerable people. Furthermore, the fire danger level will reach very high or extreme values. Aemet notes that whilst there remains a high degree of uncertainty regarding the exact intensity, extent, and duration of the event, it will most likely not trigger a formal heatwave warning.
