Torrevieja has expressed its solidarity with Colombia following a devastating nationwide earthquake and is promoting official channels for citizens to support those affected. During an appearance, Liliana Uribe, spokesperson for Torrevieja para Todos, explained that the disaster is a national emergency impacting thousands of families across the country rather than a single localised area.
According to provisional figures released on 24th August, the earthquake affected 16 of Colombia’s 32 departments and caused damage in 494 municipalities, representing nearly 45 percent of the nation’s total. The casualty reports list 324,157 people affected across 159,924 families, alongside 329 deaths, 4,592 injured individuals, 234 missing persons, and 364 people rescued. Material damage is equally extensive, with 209,755 homes affected, roughly 15 percent of which have been completely destroyed. Damages have also been recorded at educational centres, healthcare facilities, roads, communications infrastructure, and five airports.
Liliana Uribe stressed that humanitarian assistance must extend far beyond the immediate aftermath. Priorities include providing food, water, medicine, temporary shelter, construction materials, and household essentials, as well as resources to rebuild schools, health centres, basic services, and livelihoods. Emotional support for survivors and assistance for families to repair homes, return to work, and resume daily life are also critical. She emphasized that the emergency does not end when it leaves the news, calling for responsible, coordinated, and sustained solidarity.
The institutional response from the Generalitat Valenciana was also highlighted following an extraordinary meeting of its Emergency Humanitarian Aid Committee. The Generalitat announced an initial contribution of 250,000 euro to assist with food, basic supplies, water, medical equipment, child protection, psychosocial support, and economic recovery for affected families. Prior to the earthquake, the regional government was already managing 18 cooperation projects in Colombia, seven of which are located in affected zones and will be adapted to meet emergency priorities set by Colombian authorities. Additionally, Torrevieja para Todos remains in touch with the Colombian Consulate in Valencia to coordinate transparent and effective aid, while local associations prepare further initiatives. Members of the public are explicitly requested to make financial contributions strictly through accredited official channels.
