Rail operator Renfe will allow electric scooters back onto its trains from today, Monday 7th September, lifting a temporary ban introduced in 2023. The new rules apply across commuter (Cercanías), medium-distance, and long-distance services, though the measure will not yet extend to Rodalies in Catalonia or Cercanías Euskadi.
Under the updated policy, passengers may only bring personal mobility vehicles that are fully approved and compliant with current state regulations. Scooters must be registered with the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), carry an identification plate, hold mandatory third-party liability insurance, and possess a valid circulation certificate.
During the journey, electric scooters must remain folded and switched off at all times. They must be stored in designated luggage spaces or areas where they cause minimal inconvenience to other passengers, ensuring corridors, doors, emergency exits, and priority spaces remain completely clear. Battery charging on board remains strictly prohibited.
Renfe explained that the updating of its transport conditions follows the entry into force of Spain’s new national regulatory framework for personal mobility devices. The company considers that these legal requirements provide enhanced safety guarantees for all passengers while supporting a more integrated, sustainable, and accessible transport network.
The operator noted that the 2023 ban particularly affected individuals who relied on electric scooters for daily commuting for work, educational, or financial reasons. Reopening access is intended to assist commuters using affordable transport options, reduce travel times, and lessen reliance on private motor vehicles.
To ensure compliance, Renfe plans to launch customer information campaigns and strengthen internal communications with operating and security staff, maintaining safety as its top priority.
