The Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera, has expressed his firm opposition to proposed modifications to Law 3/2020 on the protection and recovery of the Mar Menor, currently being debated in the Regional Assembly. The intended changes seek to reduce financial penalties and loosen control mechanisms for those who violate environmental regulations.
Pérez Cervera argued that the current ecological state of the lagoon does not justify lowering sanctions or weakening oversight for non-compliant activities. He stated that the situation of the Mar Menor has not improved sufficiently to justify taking a step backwards regarding controls and consequences for polluters, emphasising that strict rules remain necessary to ensure full environmental recovery.
Addressing concerns regarding the agricultural sector, the mayor stressed that his position is not an attack on local farmers. He highlighted that many farmers strictly comply with current regulations and make significant efforts to balance their economic activity with environmental care. Instead of easing penalties for offenders, Pérez Cervera called on administrative bodies to simplify procedures and directly reward those who adhere to the rules.
He proposed implementing tax relief, incentives, and other supportive measures to benefit responsible farmers, arguing that priorities should focus on rewarding compliance rather than easing the plight of those who break the law. Concluding his remarks, the mayor reaffirmed that Los Alcázares will continue to advocate for full protection of the Mar Menor, maintaining that striking a balance between economic activity and the environment must not come at the expense of reducing standards for rule-breakers.
