Benidorm prepares to participate in European Mobility Week

Benidorm will once again participate in European Mobility Week from 16th to 22nd September. This year, the initiative is taking place simultaneously in 1,419 European municipalities under the slogan ‘Combine and move!’. The city has prepared a programme of activities for different audiences, combining public transport, cycling, road safety education, sports, and outdoor activities. The Councillor for Mobility, Francis Muñoz, presented the activities this Friday, which have been organised in a cross-cutting manner with the participation of municipal areas such as Historical Heritage, Parks and Gardens, Citizen Security, Education and Sports.

The programme will kick off on Wednesday the 16th, Public Transport Day, with the presentation of the urban transport fleet’s clean vehicles at the bus bays of the Palau d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm. Throughout the day, passengers will also be able to make free transfers on the urban bus network. In the afternoon, the Avenida de l’Ametlla de Mar, next to Levante Beach, will host inflatable attractions and games for children.

On Thursday the 17th, Cyclist Support Day, the new self-service bicycle repair facilities located throughout the city will be unveiled. There will also be a basic bicycle mechanics course for cyclists, taught by Biciclub Benidorm in Elche Park, and a Telpark discount campaign for public parking.

Friday the 18th will be dedicated to Road Safety Education. The Children’s Traffic Park will host an activity for 4th-year ESO students from IES l’Almadrava. Afterwards, the Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España will be the setting for a charity bicycle market, where residents can donate their unwanted bicycles to give them a second life. In the afternoon, a green cycling route will take place, starting from L’Aigüera Park and stopping at Foietes Park, El Moralet Park, and Séquia Mare Park. The route will allow participants to discover the biodiversity and ecosystems of these areas and promote respect for the environment.

On Saturday the 19th, Bike Day, one of the week’s sporting events will take place: a 6.5-kilometre route starting and finishing at the Séquia Mare Park, passing through various streets of the city to the Ermita de Sanç. A refreshment point will be set up there, and gifts and other incentives will be given to participants.

Sunday the 20th will be marked by sport and solidarity with the 4th Annual ‘En Primera Línea Benidorm 2026’ Charity Race, whose proceeds will go to ASPANION and families living with childhood cancer. The event will include 10K, 5K, fun run, Nordic walking, and children’s races. In the afternoon, there will also be a shuttle bus for 20 people from Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España to Tossal de la Cala, with prior reservation required.

The programme will continue on Monday the 21st, Road Safety and Education Day, with activities for primary school students from CEIP Aitana, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, and Bautista Lledó. The activities will take place outdoors and will focus on physical education.

European Mobility Week will conclude on Tuesday the 22nd with Car-Free Day. Between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM, vehicle access to Ermita Street will be restricted, reserved for residents and public transport. On the same day, the second Benidorm City-The Ocean Race Sustainable Mobility Award, promoted by the Department of Mobility, will be presented.

Muñoz argued that European Mobility Week allows for concrete initiatives to be brought to the streets and showcases the various ways to get around Benidorm, while also incorporating proposals related to sports, biodiversity, and exploring the city. The councillor encouraged residents to participate in the activities and gradually incorporate these options into their daily commutes.
