A mobile phone left charging on a mattress triggered a residential fire in Dénia during the early hours yesterday morning, Sunday 13th September. The incident occurred around 1:00 am in a bedroom of a second-floor flat located on Avenida Ramón Ortega, forcing the complete evacuation of the five-storey building.
A family inside the property managed to escape safely and alerted the other residents in the block to the danger. Emergency services were raised after a call to 112 alerted the Guardia Civil. Firefighters from the Dénia station responded to extinguish the blaze, deploying a command unit, a heavy urban pump, and an automatic turntable ladder, staffed by a sergeant, a corporal, and five firefighters.
Healthcare personnel attended the scene to treat the family for smoke inhalation. Specifically, emergency medical services (SAMU) treated a 61-year-old man, who was subsequently discharged on site, according to the Information and Coordination Centre for Emergencies (CICU). Evacuated neighbours were allowed to return to their homes later in the night.
