A fire broke out at a campsite in Sant Joan d’Alacant, forcing the evacuation of approximately 200 people. Two people sustained minor injuries, and the operation involved the Guardia Civil, firefighters from the Alicante Provincial Consortium, and the Sant Joan Local Police.
The incident occurred last Saturday, 12th September, when an emergency call was received at 10:06 p.m. via the 112 hotline, according to a statement from the Guardia Civil. Patrols from the Sant Joan and San Vicente del Raspeig stations, along with members of the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) from the Alicante Command, were immediately dispatched to the scene in the Camí de Marco area. They worked alongside the Local Police and several fire crews from the Provincial Consortium.
The fire started on a plot of land at the campsite, where no one was present, and spread to neighbouring houses. All available personnel assisted in the evacuation of the campsite, which resulted in the evacuation of approximately 200 people. Two people suffered minor injuries, one from smoke inhalation and the other with a cut on their hand, and were taken to the local hospital, according to the same sources.
The fire was finally extinguished at 11:20 p.m., after which residents were able to return to their homes. Following the incident, officers from the Guardia Civil in Sant Joan and the Consortium’s fire service are investigating the cause of the fire.
It so happened that Saturday was the opening day of the Cristo festivities and members of the USECIC were at the Abril motel to participate as reinforcement in surveillance work in the municipality when they became aware of the fire. The work was done jointly and the Local Police were in charge of requesting ambulances, while also helping the firefighters in the firefighting and evacuation of residents.
