Officers from the Policía Local in Torrevieja have rescued an injured sea turtle on the beach in La Mata, with marine wildlife specialists now overseeing its treatment and rehabilitation.
The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was spotted during a night patrol. The animal had a knot tied around its neck and a bag snagged onto it, which severely hindered its ability to move.
Patrol officers were able to remove the bag after confirming that it was not exerting pressure on the animal. However, in order to avoid causing potential injuries, the knot around its neck was left untouched, as reported by the Concejalía de Emergencias on social media.
The emergency protocol was triggered immediately to guarantee appropriate care and protection for the animal. Specialised staff from the Oceanogràfic de València subsequently took charge of the sea turtle on Monday to deliver necessary medical attention and assist in its recovery.
