Orihuela City Council has carried out various improvement and maintenance works around Avenida de las Brisas in Villamartín, located in Orihuela Costa, which notably included the repair of a large hole in the public highway that had previously forced a section to remain fenced off and restricted the use of a pedestrian crossing.
The works were promoted by the Department of Infrastructure, led by Víctor Valverde, in collaboration with the Coast Department, managed by Manuel Mestre, and were executed through the municipal company Servicio de Gestión Medioambiental de Orihuela (Ecoplan).
One of the main interventions successfully eliminated the large gap that had remained covered by metal sheeting and protected by a perimeter fence to prevent risks to pedestrians. Its presence had also blocked normal access to the pedestrian crossing situated at that particular point on the avenue.
To resolve the issue, workers repaired the beams supporting the pavement and constructed a 20-square-metre slab to cover the cavity. The operation additionally involved creating two extended kerbs designed to improve visibility at the pedestrian crossing.
Improvements were not restricted to this single location. The council also repainted the horizontal road markings along Avenida de las Brisas and adjacent streets, paying special attention to the six existing pedestrian crossings on the avenue as well as the parking area. The works were completed with the installation of new vertical signage.
The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, inspected the results of the operations and noted that the municipal government continues addressing long-standing problems. “Just as we promised, we continue resolving issues that had remained entrenched for many years,” he stated.
Vegara also defended the importance of these types of interventions for the daily lives of residents. “These small actions are fundamental for improving the quality of life and accessibility for neighbours,” he indicated, before advancing that the council intends to continue executing them “in a constant and systematised manner” across the entire municipal district and particularly in Orihuela Costa.
