The indoor swimming pool in La Nucia has introduced a new electronic device named Nagi, which attaches to swimming goggles or a swimming cap to connect with lifeguards and sound an alarm in the event of a potential drowning. This system also enables swimmers to monitor their training sessions through a free app and via a large display screen installed inside the facility. The service is entirely free for swimmers, funded by the Ayuntamiento of La Nucia through European funds.
By implementing this pioneering system, the indoor swimming pool in La Nucia becomes the first smart pool in the Comunitat Valenciana and joins the Spanish Network of Connected Smart Pools. This innovative project involves the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, the Higher Sports Council, the technology company Nagi-Zonyx Tech, and the Ayuntamiento of La Nucia.
The presentation event for this electronic device and the integration of the La Nucia pool into the smart pool network was attended by Matzalen Laskibar, CEO of Emtesport (the concessionaire for the La Nucia pool); José Miguel López, institutional relations director for Nagi Smartpool; Fernando Carpena, president of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation; Sergio Villalba, councillor for sports; and Bernabé Cano, mayor of La Nucia.

The installation of these Nagi Smart Pool sensors at the indoor swimming pool in La Nucia, which tracks user activity in real time and provides drowning prevention features, involved an investment of 104,398.80€ by the Ayuntamiento of La Nucia, alongside a grant of 46,800 euros from European funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for the digitalisation of swimming pools through the Higher Sports Council.
Bernabé Cano emphasised the significance of this technology, noting that the system detects if an individual remains submerged for an excessive duration and triggers an alert on the lifeguard’s wristband. Furthermore, the Nagi system allows both amateur and professional swimmers to monitor their workouts and view them on a screen in real time or via an app.
Fernando Carpena highlighted that La Nucia has positioned itself at the forefront of national swimming initiatives by joining the network, with the ultimate objective of encouraging sports participation among both federated and non-federated individuals. Matzalen Laskibar added that the complimentary devices provide metrics such as pace, time, and distance for everyone using the pool. José Miguel López pointed out that this high-level technology aids training sessions, session planning, and the early detection of sporting talent across all demographics in La Nucia.
