The traditional fair in Torrevieja is making its comeback to the port area, commonly known as the “relleno”, after a lengthy displacement to the Parque Antonio Soria market site that began in early 2023 due to major leisure centre and port redevelopment works.
The partial reception of the works by the Town Council marks a significant milestone following a municipal investment totalling 11.1 million euro across two primary and secondary electrification contracts awarded to companies within the Hozono Global group, valued at 3,265,085 euro and 7,863,401 euro respectively. These projects included budget adjustments and execution period modifications, alongside additional expenses such as the temporary relocation of the artisan hippie stalls to Avenida de la Estación, which exceeded 200,000 euro.
This return to a prime municipal location has brought higher public highway occupation fees, driven by an increase in the canon levied by the Generalitat for occupying the port’s public domain. Consequently, only about half of the 80 travelling attractions that typically operate during the peak season will return to the site for now.
While the upgraded fairground offers an open, accessible, and secure layout with pre-installed services that remove the need for repeated licence checks, the official electrical supply authorisation has not yet arrived. As a result, operators must temporarily rely on generators, for which the new site is fully equipped.
Meanwhile, final paving and landscaping work continues along the strip formerly occupied by Avenida de la Libertad. The new green zones incorporate expanded soil beds around the ficus trees and a selection of palm species designed to prevent root damage to pavements. The ground itself has been reinforced with concrete and a thick sub-layer to withstand the heavy loads of fairground machinery.
Visitors to the redesigned area can also enjoy a new walk-in fountain, an expanded collection of over 50 trees, and a rearranged layout of benches and planters. Pedestrian connections from the town centre through Plaza Castelar, Capdepont, and Rambla Juan Mateo have also been improved, enhancing overall accessibility to the bustling port area.
