The Provincial Court of Alicante has sentenced former People’s Party politician and former parliamentary president Julio de España to a year and a half in prison for sexually assaulting a patient while working as a medical specialist in Alicante. The ruling follows a trial held between May and June, where the court examined accusations brought forward by patients.
According to the sentence issued by the Second Section of the Provincial Court, the events took place during a medical consultation in a private clinic where he practised medicine. The court found that the former political figure touched a patient inappropriately during an examination, leaving the victim in shock and causing acute post-traumatic stress disorder, alongside a moderate, intermittent anxiety disorder as a lasting consequence.
In addition to the prison term of one year and six months, the court has imposed two years of supervised release and a four-year disqualification from carrying out any profession, activity, or office that involves regular and direct contact with minors. Furthermore, the convicted former official must compensate the victim with 12,000€ for the damages and suffering caused, and is prohibited from approaching or communicating with her by any means for a period of three years.
Regarding a second charge involving another patient and two additional allegations of degrading treatment, the court decided to acquit the defendant, noting that the commission of those specific criminal offences was not sufficiently proven during the judicial proceedings. The current ruling is not final and may be appealed before the Civil and Penal Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community.
