Torrevieja Council has suspended all events promoted by the institution between now and 31st October, inclusive, following the rail accident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, on the Madrid-Sevilla high-speed line. The measure coincides with the three days of official mourning declared by the Spanish Government.
The decree issued by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, establishes that the suspension will run from 00.00 hours on 29 October until 24.00 hours on 31st October. Throughout this period, the exterior flags on municipal buildings will fly at half-mast.
Among the affected events is the 4th Associations Meeting, which has been postponed, along with the Health Fair that was scheduled to take place at the International Auditorium on Thursday. The council will communicate the new dates in due course through its official channels. The parade planned for Saturday 31 October in the afternoon, featuring music, dancing, and horror characters for Halloween, which was due to set off from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre and end at Plaza de la Constitución, will also not take place.
Minute of silence
In addition, at eight o’clock on Wednesday evening, 28th October, a minute of silence was held next to the town hall, attended by the majority of the members of the municipal council alongside numerous residents, in memory of the victims of the accident.
The local authority has offered its condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and expressed its support for those affected. The decree explicitly includes the condolences of the city of Torrevieja to all those impacted by the tragedy.
