Sufi Muslim students have demanded the withdrawal of a logo for a Roberto Cavalli perfume that is said to be a copy of one of their sacred symbols.
And to make their point, thirty young Sufis demonstrated last week in Alicante insisting that the perfume logo is withdrawn and all stock and packaging bearing the logo is recalled, as they insist that the design 'degrades' one of their religion's holiest signs.
The protest took place at the Office for Fair Trade in the Internal Market (OHIM), which is the organization responsible for safeguarding the rights of brands, models and company drawings within all European Union institutions and where the Cavalli logo is registered.
The Sufi Muslim symbol is in the shape of an "H" which is shaped and concave at ends. The Cavalli perfume logo keeps the same basic shape but is rotated by 90 degrees.
Those attending the demonstration displayed banners that that said "No to plagiarism of a sacred emblem by Roberto Cavalli" and” 1400 years-old symbol-versus two years. Withdraw the logo. "OHIM want justice".
Pictures of Georgia May, daughter of the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 70, and model Jerry Hall, 57, have prompted demonstrations by thousands of Sufi Muslims outside Harrods in London, as well as in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Los Angeles, since they were first released in the middle of last year.
The campaign promoting the designer fragrance, shows Miss Jagger with an ornate H-like symbol on her skin.
This is not the first time Roberto Cavalli has run into trouble over the use of religious symbols.
Ten years ago, they made a line of bikinis which depicted Hindu gods.
The swimwear was stocked by Harrods but was pulled off the shelves after a backlash from faith groups.
