ALICANTE PLAZA EVACUATED AFTER EXPLODING AMBULANCE RISK

Part of the centre of Alicante was brought to a standstill this week as emergency services enacted the evacuation of the area near to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, as there was a risk of a gas explosion from an ambulance that had been involved in a traffic collision.

Upon attending the scene of the collision, the police and ambulance crew noted a strong smell of gad, so the Local Police cordoned off the area to allow fire fighters to work. This resulted in such attractions as the city ice rink, cafes and shops all being cleared of people.

The ambulance, a basic life support vehicle, is powered by a hybrid engine and the collision caused damage to the fuel system, where a combination of diesel and LPG are used to power the vehicle. The fire fighters carried out a temporary repair which allowed the ambulance to be taken away by a recovery vehicle about an hour after the initial incident, when it was taken back to the base, escorted by the fire service, in case of further risk.
