Torrevieja waste truck

Despite being expected for the last ten years, Torrevieja town hall has been unable to commence the tender process for a new contractor to carry out waste collection in the city, and has therefore taken the option to extend the existing contract for up to another 12 months.

As previously reported in recent weeks, the plan to readdress the waste disposal needs of a city that has grown in ten years wasn´t without disagreement, including threats of industrial action, but as the contract was believed to have been originally awarded incorrectly, as proven by the conviction of the former mayor of the city, Pedro Hernández Mateo, given 3 years in prison for his part in rigging the contract, it will now continue as before.

There have been numerous technical and legal reports by city officials warning of serious breaches of the terms of the contract, and numerous calls for it to be terminated prematurely, none of which have been heeded by either the former mayor, or the current head of the city, Eduardo Dolón.

Even now, ten years after the award, when financial experts state that the contract cannot be maintained within budget, and that the equipment failures and performance issues will mean a poorer service in the future, there still has not been enough time to tender the contract for a replacement that could have meant an improvement in service, and a potential saving to the tax payer.

This latest chapter in the story of a bleak history of the city has angered many, and resulted in accusations of incompetence of the government team, as well as their ability to manage the procurement process.
